Fact: you're more likely to cut yourself with a dull knife. Another Fact: you're more likely to miss fish with a dull hook. Think about it: your fly has a ton of opportunities to become dulled even if the hook was sharp when it left the manufacturer. Why not put your fly in the best condition to catch fish by sharpening it?
My other hook hone is square on the end and really doesn’t need to be. Always seemed to be a sharp pointy nuisance in my wader pocket.
This design with the rounded edges is great improvement and will replace that model.
I was surprised when I unpacked this tool to find it had both a coarse and a fine side. I like the slenderness which allows me to store it quite conveniently. While I have not had occasion to try it yet, my hunch is that is will sharpen knives and remove burrs on equipment. The loop is cool And sturdy, wish you could buy some of those for other pieces of equipment.
Loon’s new Hook Hone is another quality product from a top notch company. Build is solid as a rock and does the job as advertised.
