We are re-releasing our 10 favorite films from the last five years. We hope you enjoy (or re-enjoy) these stories as much as we do!

#10 PROJECT BIG WOOD
Project Big Wood is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on restoring and preserving the Big Wood River in Idaho. They work through restoration, education, and data-driven conservation efforts to improve the river's health and sustain its fish populations. The project collaborates with local partners to supportrestoration and ensure the river’s sustainability, particularly focusing on native trout populations as indicators of overall health. Through advocacy, science, and local pride, Project Big Wood aims to restore this vital community resource.
Project Big Wood recently teamed up with The Salmonfly Project in an effort to monitor the health of the Big Wood River. The Salmonfly Project is an organization that works to conserve aquatic insects in Western U.S. rivers. They research insect population health, study environmental impacts, monitor ecosystems, and engage citizen scientists to track insect populations. This conservation effort seeks to protect freshwater biodiversity and support the ecosystems reliant on these insects, including fish and birds. The organization also collaborates with local stakeholders, conservationists, and educational efforts to prevent further insect declines.
“The macroinvertebrate study is an essential piece of Project Big Wood's Habitat Monitoring Program.” says Project Big Wood Executive Director Amanda Bauman. “By understanding trends in aquatic insects, water temps, nutrients, fine sediment, and other stressors, we can begin to track the health of the Bigwood River and treat the root cause of issues in our watershed.”
#9 TOOLS OF THE TRADE: CHUCK RAGAN
Tools of the Trade is about showcasing our Ambassadors that work on the water and at the vise every day to make a living. They are part of everything we design and the problems we try to solve with our tools and products. We want our customers to know that we design tools to last, be useful, and not just look good on a shelf or a computer screen. We build tools that professional guides, tiers, and anglers rely every day to do a job and make a living. If they trust their livelihood to Loon tools we believe anglers around the world can trust our tools to tie great flies and help them chase fish anywhere they go.
This is Loon Ambassador Chuck Ragan's Story
#8 LAHAINA STRONG
Makani Christensen of Fly Fishing Hawaii has spent countless hours in an effort to help the victims of the Lahaina Wildfire that devastated West Maui in August of 2023. Through working with local food banks, repairing and recruiting furniture donations, and helping to rebuild housing in Lahaina, Makani has worked tirelessly to help rehabilitate the fire victims into long-term housing.
#7 DAGUR'S SWEET HOME ALABAMA
Dagur Guðmundsson is an Icelandic brown trout and Atlantic salmon guide who spends his off season guiding carp and bass on the central coast of California. In this tutorial, Dagur shows us how to tie his Sweet Home Alabama, a fly pattern that imitates the famous Alabama Rig or A-Rig that conventional bass anglers have been using for years to imitate a school of baitfish.
#6 DIFFERENT FISH, DIFFERENT PLACES: THE DEEP SOUTH
We recently headed to Alabama with Adam Hudson of Blue Line Flies to explore the southern boundary of the smallmouth bass’ native range. In a region dominated by gear fishing, Adam fools these beautiful, hard fighting smallmouth bass while casting fly patterns on what locals call “long rods” (fly rods).
#5 FISHING IS FISHING: KEVIN PRICE
Kevin Price finds solace and spirituality on the water, connecting with memories of loved ones he's lost and finding a deep sense of self, away from the bustling city and its constant activity. KP has been involved in the fishing industry for many years, both fly fishing and conventional fishing, believing that these seemingly different pursuits share common ground and he emphasizes the unity of all anglers who share a passion for the outdoors through the art of fishing, regardless of their chosen techniques.
“We're all out here together, we're here for the fish and the outdoors and how we're doing it or what's in our hand doesn't matter. Fishing is fishing.” -Kevin Price
#4 TOOLS OF THE TRADE: THE WATER MASTER
Tools of the Trade is a series of videos featuring Loon Outdoors Ambassadors and their use of Loon’s tools. The videos are made in partnership with Dominic Bruno of Wade Deep Media. Volume 2 of Tools of the Trade - The Water Master featuring professional guide and Loon Outdoors Ambassador John Fochetti’s on the Lower Sacramento River, Lake Shasta, Hat Creek, and around his house in Redding, California.
#3 TOOLS OF THE TRADE: THE FLOAT N' FLY
Ryan Williams is everything you want in a fly fishing guide—he has an amazing story, is completely committed to the craft, puts people into fish like crazy, and has forgotten more about fishing than most of us will ever know. But Ryan’s guiding looks different than just about every other fly guide in California for one major reason: he primarily targets bass. Sure, the trout and steelhead fishing in Northern California is too good to pass up during certain parts of the year. But the rest of the year, he has eyes only for those big strong fish that, according to Ryan, make California some of the best bass fishing in the nation.
#2 DIFFERENT FISH, DIFFERENT PLACES: CANALS IN THE DESERT
We recently explored Phoenix, Arizona with Kris Bare of the AZ Fly Shop and Derek Rivchin of Lo Water Guide Service to experience fly fishing in a region where temperatures commonly soar to over 100° Fahrenheit. From the canals to the flats, there’s a growing community of fly anglers taking advantage of the amazingly unique fisheries close to home. Stay tuned for more episodes of “Different Fish, Different Places”
#1 DIFFERENT FISH, DIFFERENT PLACES: CALIFORNIA SURF
We recently explored San Francisco Bay Area with George Revel and Steve Adachi of Lost Coast Outfitters along with Evan Praskin of Stokeventures, as well as a few anglers from the Northern California surf fly fishing community; Pete Fazzini, William O’Neil, Paul Waters and Cash Bolo to experience fly fishing the Northern California surf. These passionate anglers share the story of the rise and recent decline of non-native Striped Bass due to water exports, climate change, over-fishing, poor water management, and the agricultural industry.
