Tailgate Talks: How to Pack for a Backcountry Fly Fishing Trip

Matt from Loon Outdoors is back with another Tailgate Talk, this time breaking down how he packs for a one-to-three-day backpacking and fly fishing trip.

Getting just a mile or two off the beaten path can open up some incredible alpine lakes and lightly pressured water, but bringing fishing gear into the backcountry adds another layer to packing. Matt walks through how he keeps his fishing equipment separate and organized in his float tube while keeping his backpack focused on everything he needs for camp.

From his float tube, fins, waders, and fishing essentials to water filtration, cooking gear, emergency equipment, bug protection, and shelter, Matt breaks down the gear that lets him comfortably spend a few days in the mountains without carrying a massive pack. His complete overnight setup, including the float tube and waders, comes in at around 24 pounds before water.

Matt also takes a closer look at his modular quilt-based sleep system and why getting a good night’s sleep ultimately means more time exploring and fishing the next day.

Hopefully this gives you a few ideas for your own setup—and a reason to hike a little farther, get off the beaten path, and find some new water.
