If you’re grading on effectiveness, simplicity, and adaptability, the Elk Hair Caddis scores an 11. Tied with just a few materials, it can be dressed up in countless ways to match specific caddis hatches. Though this is often one of the first dry flies a tyer will learn to tie, this pattern continues to be the standard by which other caddis patterns are measured.

sharp, cuts well in tight spots, easy to handle
Picked these up after my old scissors became so worn they wouldn't cut. Man, these things are super sharp and have a nice fine tip to get in and make precision cuts.
Great scissors. Nice thin tapered tip and big finger loops.
Everyone would benefit from a pair of these scissors.
These scissors were an impulse buy but now I use them frequently for midges, dries, and small patterns. Perfect getting that perfect butt end of a body and for cleaning up the tiny hair and fibers that build up around the eye. Definitely recommend.
I’m fairly new to fly tying and this stuff is a major confidence booster. Been using it for cress bug backs and coating some midges, and the flies just look (and work) better. You can trust Loon products and their customer service is nothin short of spot on. Thanks Loon Outdoors!
PS. Their bench lights, forceps, snips etc are all high quality and superb for the price. This is a company that wants to make an intimidating sport more accessible to all. applause for that!
I lied this mostly on top of some flash for wing casing. It’s worked great for me for stone flys in the past for steelhead, browns, and salmon! I’ve also been using it for tying perdigon’s and it’s great! 10 out of 10
But sparingly on the theory that underwater insects & etc. are not fluorescent over large areas, but sparingly are lit in a few anatomical spots, or features. I've had good luck targeting trout in small WA lakes & m anxious to do some "testing" for steelhead this season & winter.
This is a great product. Extremely fast processing and shipping
Nice product and super customer service.
This new Loon hair stacker is an outstanding product. The ability to actually see how and how well my hair tips stack and align is a wonderful addition to my arsenal of fly tying tools and techniques. Very nice product!
I haven’t had a chance to use my new hair stacker a whole lot yet, but my initial impressions are that it is a huge improvement on the traditional tube type stackers I’ve been using. There are a couple things I really like. First is that it’s not round and won’t roll off my table. Second is that it’s one piece. Third you can see the stacking through the window and access the stacked hair without disturbing it. Lastly I like the bright yellow Loon color. It’s easy to find quickly in my cluttered work space.
The design really was done with the fly tyer in mind. Like all of Loon products, it’s built like a tank. Having the viewer at the bottom allows you to see what’s going on, allowing you to check in on it before you pull the stack. Having a hinge on the bottom section, you don’t disturb the bundle, letting you grab it exactly how it was stacked. Definitely the only style hair stacker I will use from now on. Thanks again Loon Outdoors, for another excellent product!
Finally a stacker where I don’t lose the bottom piece. I got the medium and just ordered the small. Well thought out design.
Loon is always surprising me with items that I'd assumed could not be improved upon. This Zippy Hair Stacker is a great example. You get so used to your old stacker, clunky but functional, but then when it turns up missing after a trip, you replace it with this beauty and wonder at how much better it is. They did this right, as I've found they have a habit of doing. Bought the small size and will now replace my larger one as well. Great item indeed.
